Looking back in history

1975: Kallol of New Jersey was formed on April 13th by 24 members. The first Executive Committee was formed on April 13th with 9 members. The Constitution was adopted in the general meeting held on October 25th by the previously formed Executive Committee and its decisions were ratified. The Committee was also expanded to 11 members at this time. On July 7th, Kallol of New Jersey was formally incorporated in the State of New Jersey. The first event was the picnic held on July 19th, 1975, at the Watchung Reservation. A drama Sharmila, directed by Dr. Ajit Rakhit was staged on August 23rd at Scotch Plains Fanwood high School. Our first Bijoya Sammilanee was held on October 25th at Glenfield Park House in Montclair. On November 8th, the movie Biraj Bou was screened.

1976: India´s Republic Day was observed by the members on January 24th, at the Glenfield Park House. First issue of quarterly newsletter of Kallol was published on January 22nd, 1976. Kallol also launched the publication of its literary magazine “Kallol Sahitya Patrika”.

1977: Kallol started their first Durga Puja named “New Jersey Durga Puja”, to cater to the, growing Bengali Community of New Jersey, and extended their invitation to the entire Indian diaspora. Lakshmi Puja, an integral part of the Durga Puja was also celebrated.
